"Rio" was a handsome Rottweiler mix that was surrendered to the animal shelter by his owner on September 14, 2020. He was a little shy at first, but once he got used to us, he became a real sweetheart. His happy video got him some quick attention and he was rescued by MLR Georgia Rescue on September 17, 2020. Anne, Becky, Jason, Nancy, Heidi and Lorraine all made donations to the rescue for saving him!

“Fawn” was an adorably happy and playful girl that came into the animal shelter on September 8, 2020. I’ve heard talk of the new “Silver Lab” designer breed, but not sure if Fawn was one or not. She had some features of a Lab, and perhaps of a bulldog or mastiff. She had a beautiful blue nose and gray coat with a light tan brindle pattern. Truly a unique girl. She was impounded during a week of many dogs coming into the shelter. Although she was posted on lost/found websites and multiple adoption websites and social media outlets, no owner came to claim her. She was rescued by Barkville Dog Rescue on September 15, 2020. She was sponsored by donations to the rescue from Anne, Becky, Jason, Nancy and Lorraine. I know Pitbulls have gotten a bad reputation in the media, but sweet “Allie” didn’t fit the stereotype at all (as is usually the case with most prejudices). The girl was always calm, quiet and submissive in her kennel. And in the outdoor pens she turned into a real love bug, crawling up into your lap and snuggling your chest!
She was picked up stray by an animal control officer on September 8, 2020. I was afraid that being a week of insanely high impounds, this sweet little girl wouldn’t make it because she was a black pitbull; probably the most overlooked breed and color. So she got her Furtography Session the day after she was impounded. Although she had a spay tattoo, she didn’t have a tag or microchip to find her owner, and no owner came to look for her. Thankfully, there was a run on rescue pick-ups following the week of high intake. But was Allie going to get left behind? No! On September 15, 2020, Barkville Dog Rescue came back to the shelter and picked her up. After pulling three other dogs, they couldn’t leave her behind. Allie’s freedom was sponsored by donations to the rescue from Anne, Becky, Jason, nancy, Cynthia, Maria and Lorraine. "Boss" was an older male Lab and Bulldog mix breed that was found running the neighborhood a Police Officer and brought to the animal shelter on September 7, 2020. His personality truly matched his happy appearance. He was always happy to see me come in to the kennel each day and get his morning walk. Not only did he love the staff, but seemed to enjoy other dogs as well. Sadly, no owner came to look for him, but he was saved by Barkville Dog Rescue on September 14, 2020! He was sponsored by donations to the rescue from Nancy, Anne, Jason and Becky.
"Koda" was picked up by an animal control officer on September 7, 2020. When the shelter tracked down her owner through the microchip, they said they had adopted her from a friend that couldn't take care of her. They too could no longer care for her and surrendered her to the shelter. Would that be her fate, to be bounced around home to home? Thankfully, on September 11, 2020 she was adopted into a new home... hopefully for good this time! “Brook” was a super-sweet stray that was picked up by an animal control officer on September 3, 2019. Although she had a lovable personality, it was quite hard to get a good photograph showing that tender personality. She had such a horrible ear infection that she was constantly shaking her head during the photo session. Thankfully, Atlanta Lab Rescue overnighted some ear medications to get her on the mend. Then, when no owner or adopters came for her, ALR came and rescued her on September 10, 2020!
“Jezebel” was a white Pitbull Terrier mix breed dog that was picked up stray by an animal control officer on August 18, 2020. Her owner didn’t come to claim her and she was rescued by Royal Animal Refuge on August 28, 2020. Anne sponsored Jezebel with a donation to the rescue.
"River" was a handsome Bulldog and Mastiff mix that was surrendered to the animal shelter on August 25, 2020 when his owner lost his job because of the COVID19 pandemic. When the rain stopped later that afternoon, he went outside for his photographs and adoption video. That evening, the folks at Pound Puppies N Kittens Rescue recognized him as a pup they had rescued from another shelter. They came first thing the next morning and saved him! He was sponsored by donations to the rescue from Anne and Jason.
"Molly" was a precious soul that came into the animal shelter as a stray on July 8, 2020. She was a calm, sweet senior. Although she was very thin and tested heartworm positive, Zen Animal Rescue found room in their heart and home to take her in. She was rescued from the shelter on July 16, 2020! She was sponsored by a pledged donation to the rescue from Anne. A short time later I received an update from Zen Animal Rescue: I wanted to update you on sweet Molly. We went for a wellness exam today and found out that she is a very sick girl. No worries though, she will get all she needs here with us. "Sky" was picked up stray by an animal control officer on July 2, 2020. This poor girl's coat and skin was full of mange, but her heart was full of love! Thankfully she was afforded some extra time in the shelter because intake was slower than normal. She was rescued by The DAWG Squad on July 16, 2020. Her rescued was sponsored by a donation from Anne.
"Tucker" was a cute Beagle picked up by an animal control officer on July 1, 2020. No owner came to claim him and he was rescued by Tampa Bay Beagle Rescue on July 9, 2020.
"Whitney" was a cute stray kitten that came into the animal shelter on July 8,2020. She was rescued by Altered Feral State the following day!
"Grace" was a sweet senior Boxer dog that was picked up stray by an animal control officer on June 17, 2020. No owner came to look for her and she was rescued by Atlanta Boxer Rescue on June 24, 2020. Jason and Anne made generous donation pledges to the rescue for saving her. A few days later we got a nice note from the rescue.
Hi Bill. Thanks for being patient with us on pulling Grace. Her foster reports she is a sweet girl and she settled in right away. I just wanted to let you know she has changed her name to Goose and her freedom ride was posted with that name. We appreciate all you do to help the animals in your care get into homes and rescues. Thanks. Rebecca
"Irene" was another sweet senior dog that came into the animal shelter this week. She had a nice red-ticked coat, long floppy years, and a stellar, single blue eye. She was picked up stray by an animal control officer on June 18, 2020. When no owner came looking for her, she was rescued by Second Chance Habitat on June 23, 2020. She was heartworm positive, but generous pledges from Becky, Nancy, Heidi, Adela, Cindy, Dana, Alice, Jason and Anne helped the rescue cover those costs. Thanks all!
"Maggie Mae" was brought into the shelter on June 18, 2020. I would never have known it based on her sweet personality in the shelter, but the callers and responding animal control officer said she was being quite the pistol out on the streets. But it turns out she was probably defending her puppies which were somewhere in the neighborhood.
Later, when an officer went back to look for her puppies again, her owner came out and surrendered her to the officer. Thankfully, with the efforts of some citizens and police, Maggie was reunited with her puppies which were found in a crawl space under a nearby house. All went safely to Pup and Cat Co Rescue on June 22, 2020 and were sponsored by pledges to the rescue from Adela, Nancy, Jason, Becky and Anne.
Summertime is upon us and kitten season is in full swing. In just a matter of hours the shelter can receive well over 15 kittens. Finding homes for them all is always a challenge. But thankfully there are a few local rescues that are bailing out the shelter kitties. "KitKat" and "Kelly" were from a litter of five that were rescued by Altered Feral State rescue on June 12, 2020.

"Amber" was a happy Akita and Ductch Shepherd mix (that's a guess!) that was brought to the animal shelter as a stray on June 2, 2020. No owner came to claim her and she was adopted into a new home on June 9. Her wonderful adopter sent an update to us:
