Colby was a 5-month-old kitten picked up in a local park by an animal control officer on January 12, 2021. No owner came to claim him and he was rescued by Altered Feral State Rescue on January 15, 2021!
"Ollie" was a handsome boy that was picked up stray by an animal control officer on January 7, 2021. Someone had tied a collar and wire so tight around his neck he was almost choking.
I got to spend a week with Ollie in the shelter. Despite being a "yard dog", he had great manners and would even hold it in his kennel. He'd bark longingly each morning when he heard me arrive, waiting to go for a walk. He was a very calm and affectionate fellow. But since he tested heartworm positive (another problem with chaining your dogs outdoors 24/7), it was getting hard to find him a home. But thanks to pledges from Becky, Lorraine, Nancy, Barbara, Alice, and Cindy totalling $630 for his heartworm treatement, he was rescued on January 14, 2021 by Atlanta Lab Rescue! Shelter ID#: 5124
"Ranger" was turned in to the animal control shelter stray on January 7, 2021. He was a very happy mix breed that was already neutered. No owner came looking for him and he was adopted into a new home on January 11, 2021. His adopter had another dog they had adopted from the shelter 5 years ago that looked so similar to "Ranger" they could be siblings.
Chip was picked up stray by an animal control officer. Although his owner was notified, he never came and claimed him. Chip was adopted into a new home on December 28, 2020!
His new owner sent a few shots of "Chip" enjoying his new home...
"Coal" was picked up stray by an animal control officer on December 14, 2020. He was adopted on December 21, 2020!
“Chevy” was a young, female American Pitbull Terrier that was surrendered to the animal shelter by her owner on November 5, 2020. With a beautiful blue coat, she was absolutely gorgeous, so no worries there. But she was a young, high-energy dog that grew up in a home without other pets. In her excitement, she didn’t know how to properly interact with other canines and it bordered on animal aggression. A dog-aggressive Pitbull always spells doom in an open intake “pound” where dogs need to be adopted or rescued quickly.
Although play time would be limited with other dogs, she certainly loved to play with people! I had to show that in her images. I first tried to soften her look by putting on a colorful bandana. It is also helpful in pet photography to get shots that show a happy panting tongue instead of a solid stare.
Thankfully, Chevy liked playing fetch. It wasn’t easy to capture a play photo that wasn't blurry, but eventually one image came along. I kept one hand on the camera and with the other kept tossing her the rope toy.
Over the next week there wasn’t much interest in her. But finally the playful image and the generous rescue pledges were enough to get her noticed. Pound Puppies N Kittens Rescue sent their behaviorist to the shelter who spent some time with her. They took her for an overnight stay and on November 18, 2020 she was rescued from the animal shelter! A special thanks to Anne, Nancy, Jason, Becky, Lorraine, Dana, Kay and Sue who together donated to Pound Puppies N Kittens $1,000 for her rescue!
"Drago" was an older Dutch Shepherd mix breed dog that was picked up stray by an animal control officer on October 7, 2020. He was rescued on October 19, 2020 by Second Chance Habitat Rescue! He was sponsored by donations to the rescue from Anne, Nancy, Jason, Becky and Dana.
"Freddy" was a cute Dachshund mix dog picked up stray by an animal control officer on October 8, 2020. No owner came to look for him and he was rescued on October 14, 2020 by Ark of Promise Rescue. His rescue was sponsored by donations to the rescue from Nancy, Becky and Jason.
"Denver" was an older Rhodesian Ridgeback mixed breed dog that was picked up stray by an animal control officer on October 6, 2020. He was a very happy boy, already neutered, and sit and shaked on command, but no owner ever came to bail him out. He was rescued on October 13, 2020 by DAWG Squad Rescue! His freedom was sponsored by donations to the rescue from Anne, Becky, Nancy, Jason, Elyse, and Lorraine.
"Sadie" was a sweet, spayed mix breed girl that was surrendered to the animal control shelter by her owner on October 7, 2020. She was rescued October 12, 2020 by Burlington County Animal Alliance. She was sponsored by donations to the rescue from Anne, Becky, Nancy and Jason.
In the late 1800’s, men rushed to the Yukon for gold. And what would carry them there were dogs - sled dogs; courageous and gorgeous Huskies and Malamutes. In Call of the Wild, Jack London wrote, “...men, groping in the Arctic darkness, had found a yellow metal, and because steamship and transportation companies were booming the find, thousands of men were rushing into the Northland. These men wanted dogs, and the dogs they wanted were heavy dogs, with strong muscles by which to toil, and furry coats to protect them from the frost.” And to this day, people still love these gorgeous animals, which is why they are so popular when then come into the shelter.
“Odin” was a beautiful Husky that I recently had the privilege to photograph. He was picked up stray by an animal control officer on September 9, 2020. Even though he was underweight, he still had that attractive sled dog appeal. Odin’s owner was notified, but never came to claim him. During his twelve day stay in the shelter, Odin received over a dozen adoption applications. And on September 21, he went home with one lucky adopter. I love to photograph the Huskies and Malamutes that come into the animal shelter. Perhaps it is that wild look of their wolf ancestry that makes them appear so strong, independant and majestic. Tall, proud, alert, confident… these traits always come through in the photograph. They make a photographer's job quite easy! Odin was no exception.
"Petey" was a cute Pitbull dog with cropped ears that was surrendered to the animal shelter by his owner on September 18, 2020. In an amazing turn-around, he was rescued within hours of sending out a rescue aler. He was picked up by Royal Animal Refuge and didn't even need to spend one night in the shelter! He was sponsored by generous pledges to the rescue from Anne, Becky and Jason. Thanks all!
Received a nice note about a pup adopted from the shelter in October 2018: In October of 2018 we found a spunky, but snippy Husky. We just couldn’t leave her there. I went home talked with my husband and it was a go! She was very shy, did not like any male figure. She was very vocal about certain things. She wouldn’t allow you near her to eat. So we adapted to her. She finally got to let me be by her side while she’d eat. She didn’t learn how to play with any dog toys or even a ball.
Here’s the good news... she finally got comfortable for me to hand feed her and let me pet her while she was eating. After a year with us she finally held her tail up In the proper stance. She was my diamond in the rough. We only had this time with her, almost 2 years. She had to be put down Monday. I don’t know what I would have done without her. She was very stubborn but man that was still the best time. Here’s a before and after. Thanks for everything you do. I truly want to help foster so that these babies can have a home until the get a new one. Leann |
